How can I close my American Express credit card account?

I have a green card. I do not need this card anymore and I wont just keep it and receive annual membership fees. How do I close it?
How can I close my American Express credit card account?
better make sure THIS isnt one of your oldest credit cards!

AMEX has been notorious of removing 'history' if you cancel out the credit card. THIS ISNT ILLEGAL, but it will drastrically affect your credit score.

another thing....ask them if they can switch it to a blue card where you dont have to pay for the annual fees....

otherwise the number is on the back of the card itself
Reply:Simply call American Express...normally the number is on the back of the card or on a recent invoice. Just tell them you are closing the account
Reply:simply call to amex and you can close you credit card. Get more information about American express at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/Ameri...
Reply:Call up Amex and tell them you are closing the account. Ask them to send you something in writing stating that the account is closed.
Reply:I agree with getting the account closure in writing. You may want to send a certified letter requesting closure after you call. In other words take control. You also want to keep a copy of your letter and the proof of delivery. Check your credit in about 30 to 60 days to be sure the account reads "closed by consumer" not by lender. That way it won't hurt your credit score. If it doesn't show closed by consumer. Call AMEX and request they fix it and dispute it with the bureaus.
