How can I tell who broke into my email account?

I'm fairly certain my ex-bf broke into my verizon email account. Is there a way to track this? Can I figure out who last logged into the account at all or from what computer? Someone told me something about an IP address, but said that's how you find out where an email message came from. Is there a way to track what IP address logged into your account though? Thanks!

A couple answers are close.

If you can read the full header of an email.. then depending on the email provider.. you might be able to ind the originating IP address... which would then give you the opportunity to trace that to the "closest router of the ISP". In most cases this is all you need to say report abuse / spam...

However, you want to know who has logged into your own account. So given you have a business relationship with Verizon.. they would be your best bet.

You can absolutely contact Verizon's security department and work with them to find out when the account was last logged into and what IP address it came from.

If you want to find out who that IP tracks to THEN you will need a subpoena (court order) in order to get that information from whichever ISP its coming from... giving it to you without a subpoena would be a violation of the ECPA.

If you know what ISP your boyfriend uses and you can get evidence that someone from that provider logged into your account... AND you can somehow show that they've done something malicious that has caused you actual damages... then you can pursue something legal (either criminal or civil).. but getting into your email account alone is not enough.

Good Luck
Reply:you need to track your email by an external service that tracks an ip address, then IF he breaks in again the service will log the ip addresses that access taht account then with the ip address (if its static) you can find real world address (home address).
Reply:Did you contact Verizon. They might be able to tell you everything and give you data. Date time, IP address (computer's location)
Reply:Yep a software called Mcafee has a built in tracker for ips

It's in the Internet Security 2008 product

Otherwise there may be a log for your account at verizon ask them

Good Luck
Reply:Your ex's ISP issues his IP Address. And most people have a dynamic IP address that their ISP changes every 24 hours or so. Pretty useless to anyone.

In the USA, the only way to get an ISP to release personal information (name, telephone, address etc.) about a particular IP address is with a Court Order.

And Court Orders are usually only given out in the case of suspected serious criminal activity. Don't hold your breath.

All someone can determine from an IP address is the general geographic location. Perhaps narrow it down to one in a million people.
Reply:Not without getting suspended from your own account.
