Just wondering....Im a newleywed, and I need to know where to set my limits!!!
How much money do most people keep in their bank account?
Well it depends on your income obviously...if you and your husband's combined annual income before taxes is 100,000 I'd say to keep about 5000 in your checking account at most times. You'll get paychecks deposit some, withdraw some. But you don't want to keep to much in a checking account because it doesn't pay interest and when it does its really low. You're better off investing in stocks and bonds or in a high yield savings account at the minimum. Hope that helps!
Reply:Rule of thumb varies depending on who you ask. You should keep 3-6 months worth of living expenses in an easy to reach savings or money market account. Anything more than that is better put elsewhere in higher interest bearing investments, retirement accounts, stocks, etc.
Reply:I as close to zero in checking and most in savings or a money market account. I have a $2000 line of credit that is free to draw from as long as it is paid back that same day. As money comes out, I replace it with savings money.
Reply:Enough in your checking to meet your monthly bills, then 6-8 months worth of money in your savings account. It's best if these accounts are linked, just in case you accidentally go below balance in your checking. You'll still get an overdraft fee, but at least your checks won't bounce.
Reply:Don't set any limits on money to keep in your bank account. If you can keep $500 million in there, by all means do so. Burying it out in your back yard is soooo psychotic.
Reply:$100,000.00 USD.
Reply:lol. keep no less then 500$

the rest is tied up in investments
Reply:Basically anything that isn't already spent(bills) and anything that's currently being invested, other than that all of it. So if your account is insured up to 200,000 than that's how much you put in it.
Reply:Enough to cover your expenses for 1mnth including rent/mortgage, utilities, car payments %26amp; other auto expenses including gas, as well as any credit card bills. My wife and I are also recently married (6mnths ago), and decided together to keep our balance at the monthly expense level, It has worked for us for the past 6mnths. Hope that helps.
