How do i transfer some money to a US bank account from the UK?

I am attending a conference that requires course fee payments in US dollars. They accept wire transfer/ cheque etc. However i am not sure how to go about doing this as i live in the UK. I don't want to loose too much money in the transfering process.

First make sure that the conference/company is legitimate. Then you will have to go to your bank in the UK and submit them instructions (which the beneficiary should have given to you already)
